2005 ford explorer review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. America's most popular suv. introductionfor more than a dozen years, the ford explorer has been the best-selling suv in america. In fact, it's the sixth best-selling vehicle. It's become the standard-issue suburban family hauler. Though capable as a tow vehicle and able to venture off the highway, most explorers spend their lives shuttling people, collecting groceries and performing the duties station wagons performed when baby boomers were growing up. The explorer answers this call admirably and comfortably, and that's a big part of the reason it's so popular. the explorer is roomy and comfortable. It can seat seven people when equipped with the optional third-row seat, which folds flat into the cargo floor when not needed. Part of the reason for this is a superb five-speed automatic transmission. Explorer's wide track and long wheelbase give it a solid, stable stance, while its independent rear suspension (an unusual feature in a mid-to-large-size suv) gives it a smoother ride and better handling than suvs with traditional live rear axles. safety features abound. Advancetrac with roll stability control is now standard on all explorers. This sophisticated system not only senses and corrects potential skids and slides, but also monitors for potential rollovers. We recommend the optional safety canopy airbags, which are designed to provide some protection in the event of a rollover. Anti-lock brakes (abs) are also standard, and a tire pressure monitor comes on all but the base model. the explorer is rated to pull trailers up to 7,140 pounds when properly equipped, and though it does not excel at off-road travel, it can go most of the places most of us need to go. lineupthe 2005 ford explorer is available in six trim levels: xls, xls sport, xlt, xlt sport, eddie bauer, and limited. an overhead-cam v6 engine is standard on all models. An off-road package 385) for xls and xlt consists of skid plates, tow hooks, off-road suspension and all-terrain tires. the optional safety canopy air curtain system 560) is designed to help protect first- and second-row outboard occupants during side-impacts or rollovers, and is designed to improve rollover protection by staying inflated for a longer period. Ford has done a great deal of research on this technology and we strongly recommend this option. walkaroundwith its wheels pushed out toward the corners, the ford explorer looks stable and comfortable. Though ubiquitous, it is a handsome, good-looking vehicle. Front and rear fascia are smoothly integrated, while jeweled headlamps and tail lamps give it a sophisticated look. Various combinations of bright, blacked-out, color-contrasting or color-coodinated trim distinguish the xls from the xlt from the bauer from the limited. Uplevel models come standard with an illuminated keypad on the door for keyless entry. The keypad doesn't improve the appearance of the explorer, but it continues to be a popular feature among loyal ford owners. interiorthe explorer is a comfortable vehicle, even on long trips. We found the cloth seats in the xlt comfortable, firm, and supportive, with lots of adjustments. The same held true for the leather seats in the eddie bauer model. adjustable pedals, a tilt steering wheel, and long seat travel help the explorer fit a wide variety of body types. Big coat hooks accommodate thick hangers and big loads of dry cleaning, something few manufacturers get right. Nicely designed cubbies with rubber mats provide space for a wallet, sunglasses, a pen, cans, and bottles. A relatively large center console keeps odds and ends in check. The interior door handles seemed a bit awkward at first, but that went away with familiarization. Map pockets on the insides of the doors are handy and swell at the end to hold water bottles, but wouldn't accommodate the one-liter size. The front power outlet was positioned well for a cell phone, but like most, was a reach for a radar detector. The trip computer came in handy, calculating the distance to an empty fuel tank. The optional six-disc in-dash cd player sounds good and is easy to operate, with large, clearly marked controls. the second row of seats is quite comfortable. Many people prefer the second-row bucket seats available on eddie bauer and limited, which are more comfortable but only accommodate two passengers. seatbelts use retractors and pre-tensioners designed to reduce injuries in a hard crash. The second-row center seat has an integrated shoulder belt, a feature not found on all suvs. All occupants should always wear their seat belts as they are the first line of defense in an accident. third-row seating is available. In fact, the decision to add third-row seating drove the design and engineering of the current explorer. As a result, ford has done an excellent job of making the third row as roomy as possible, while also making it fold quickly into the floor when it isn't needed. It isn't comfortable for an adult. Head, hip, and leg room in the explorer's third row measure 38. 9, 45. 4, and 34. 9 inches, respectively, versus the envoy xl's 38. 5, 45. 9, and 31. 2. 2005 chevrolet malibu review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Solid mid-size sedan; practical maxx. introductionthe chevrolet malibu was launched to compete with the mid-size imports from japan. We were surprised by the acceleration performance from the v6 and delighted by the crispness of handling on winding roads. It feels firmer than the camry, but softer than the accord, a good balance, in other words. Malibu's solid structure is based on gm's new epsilon platform used by a couple of highly successful european sedans. Along with its compliant suspension, this gives the malibu a smooth, comfortable ride, yet allows for spirited driving. This is no mush-mobile. It's quiet underway. No question, this is a highly competent sedan that's practical and easy to live with. where the malibu needs work is in the appearance department. Introduced as an all-new model for 2004, the malibu is better looking than the plain-looking previous model, but it's no raving beauty. That silver band across the front is designed to clearly identify this as a chevy, but it won't go down in history as a great design. the malibu has something the imports don't: the maxx. Maxx is a longer-wheelbase variant, whose extended roofline and rear cargo hatch suggest a sporty station wagon. While malibu seems destined to disappear into a crowd, maxx looks just as determined to stand out and be noticed. starting at just a hair under $19,000 and topping out below $25,000, malibu base prices are extremely competitive with the prices of the honda accord and toyota camry, which can approach $30,000 with options. The previous malibu ranked tops in the midsize car class in the j. Ls and lt versions come with a 3. 5-liter overhead-valve v6. Anti-lock brakes (abs) with traction control are optional 400). Side-impact airbags and head curtain airbags are optional for base and ls models 690) and we recommend them highly. A package 1,095) for the ls sedan includes: side curtain airbags; remote vehicle starter; carpeted floor mats; and six-way power driver's seat. lt adds: automatic climate control; seat-mounted side-impact and side curtain airbags; front and rear reading lights; remote vehicle starter; leather seats; heated front seats; 6-way power driver's seat; seat cushion storage pockets for outboard seating positions; leather-wrapped steering wheel with steering wheel-mounted audio and cruise controls; leather-wrapped shift knob; two illuminated vanity mirrors in front; fog lamps; power and heated outside rearview mirrors; body-color rocker moldings; a rear spoiler; 16-inch tires and wheels. Three levels of audio are available, from the base am/fm stereo and cd player to the top-of-the-line system with an in-dash, six-cd changer, six speakers, and automatic volume and tone controls 300). A unique option is the remote starter 150), useful both in cold climates to warm up the car before the driver climbs in and in extremely hot climates to cool it down. walkaroundthe chevrolet malibu looks more contemporary than its bland predecessor, with more character and class. It also looks more substantial, giving the impression it's a more expensive car than it is. And it is, indeed, more substantial, slightly wider than the model it replaces. the front features a chrome bar across the full-width of the car, with the familiar chevy bowtie in gold in the center. The bar along, along with malibu's squinty headlamps, attempts to invoke a family resemblance to chevy trucks, which have been highly successful in the marketplace, but the design execution didn't work as well on this mid-size car. the rear of the sedan resembles the upright rears of european cars. And indeed, the malibu shares its structure with the highly successful german opel vectra and the swedish saab 9-3. Malibu is built on gm's new epsilon global platform, a front-wheel-drive architecture developed by a team of american, german and swedish engineers. Epsilon is also being used for the new pontiac g6. The bottom line is that the epsilon platform provided good bones for a new malibu sedan. from the center post of its roof forward, malibu maxx is identical to the sedan. From there back, however, maxx is a different and more innovative vehicle. Maxx isn't larger than the sedan, but it is proportioned differently. At 106. 3 inches, the wheelbase of the malibu sedan stands at the small end of the mid-size spectrum. Maxx rides a wheelbase that's six inches longer, stretching 112. 3 inches. Yet in overall length the maxx is a half-inch shorter than the sedan (187. 8 inches vs. 188. 3). That gives the maxx very short overhangs, a good thing. Maxx is a half-inch taller than the sedan. Its roof is longer, its trunk shorter, increasing space for rear-seat passengers. interiorthe malibu looks as substantial inside as out. With 101 cubic feet of interior space, the malibu sedan is extremely roomy for five passengers. The seats are comfortable. The front passenger seat cleverly folds flat for carrying long objects such as skis. The rear seat splits and folds 60/40. the interior is conservatively styled. Controls on the center dash are conveniently backlit for night driving. The heating and air conditioning controls were a little confusing, however. Likewise, the stereo seemed designed more for style than function, though it worked well. We thought the wipers were a little loud. And the triangularly shaped outside mirrors are small, limiting rearward vision more than we liked. otherwise, it's a convenient interior. Its rear seat is split 60/40 not only in the back, but in the cushion; and each unit slides fore and aft as much as seven inches to adjust between passenger and cargo room. Rear-seat passengers sit farther back in the maxx and enjoy nearly identical room as the front-seat occupants, and as much as the rear-seat riders in a full-size domestic sedan. Maxx's rear seatbacks also recline for improved comfort. In short, the back seats of the maxx are a comfortable place for adults. standard in the maxx is a fixed skylight over the rear seating area, so rear-seat passengers can see clouds by day and stars by night. Or they can close their individual sunshades. back in the cargo bay, maxx provides 22. 8 cubic feet of space, vs. 15. 4 for the trunk of the sedan. Fold down maxx's back seats and the available space expands to 41 cubic feet. There's a 12-volt power outlet way in the back in addition to the two up front that it shares with the sedan.

It feels like a tight european sedan, with a smooth ride. for 2004, there's a new engine option and a new rack-and-pinion steering system, improving on its already good acceleration and precise handling. the s60 fills the middle range in volvo's lineup: it's larger than the s40, but not quite as large as the premium-luxury s80. Not surprisingly, the s60 also fits between those models in price. lineupno less than five 2004 models are available: s60 2. 4 26,960), s60 2. 5t 29,610), s60 2. 5t awd 31,385), s60 t5 33,285) and s60r 37,250). s60 2. 4 comes with a 2. 4-liter, five-cylinder engine that produces 168 horsepower and 166 pounds-feet of torque. (a 165-horsepower, super-low-emissions, or sulev, version is sold only in california.) a five-speed manual transmission is standard. A five-speed automatic transmission is optional 1,000). It's handsome in a lars-in-a-cable-knit sweater kind of way. Not a remnant remains of the 'boxy but safe' styling that volvo championed so doggedly for decades. volvo says the s60 represents 'the essence of contemporary scandinavian design. The s60 seems compact at first glance, and there's a hunched-shoulder look to the rear flanks, suggesting a hockey player ready to lead a charge up the ice. the s60r is distinguished by a smoother, longer nose; a smaller, lower grille; and a larger air dam with bigger intake openings for the big turbo and twin intercoolers. interioroverall, the volvo s60 interior is handsome and comfortable. The leather looks and feels like quality. There's good interior space up front, more than in the bmw 3 series or mercedes c-class. the dashboard flows in a pleasant shape. The quality of the material used to cover other surfaces is good. The gauges are attractive, with their flat gray background, and easy to read, while the switches are intuitive and easy to use. The heating, ventilation and air conditioning controls are well designed and easy to operate, with big buttons that use volvo's clever metaphoric design to direct the airflow. Electric window buttons with auto-down are conveniently mounted on the door. Inside door handles are easy to grab. the innovative radio controls take some familiarization to master. Changing preset channels involves turning a knob, rather than pressing a button, for example. Once understood, however, it works very well. The leather-wrapped steering wheel features controls for the audio system that makes operating it easier while driving. the center console storage is positioned rearward, so it's harder to reach. The cup holders, mounted just forward of the console, are covered with a flimsy lid. There's another mini cup holder on the center of the dash. The manual shift lever has a silver-colored plastic cover at its base that looks like silver-colored plastic. A traditional leather boot would better complement the s60's luxurious leather upholstery. getting into the back seat requires a duck of the head. An average-sized male will be short of legroom, however. The trunk itself is roomy and deep; it'll hold a lot of small bags, but big hard-sided bags might be a challenge. The rear seats are split 60/40 and fold down to carry long items. Driven hard around turns, it almost seems like a '90s version of a '60s muscle car. The relatively long throw of the five-speed gearbox adds to the retro feel. the s60 doesn't offer the razor-edge handling of the bmw 330i. Pushed through bumpy, high-speed corners, the s60's steering can't keep up. The suspension is tuned for comfort, not hard cornering, so the body leans in the chase. But the ride is excellent, even over nasty bumps, even with the optional 17-inch wheels fitted with pirelli p6 all-season 235/45hr17 radials. the s60 is front-wheel-drive, and torque steer rears its head, especially with the more powerful t5. Volvo's turbocharged engines get great gas mileage. With the five-speed manual transmission the t5 gets 21/27 mpg. the brakes were on the soft side, but the abs was very smooth. We didn't feel thrown forward in the seat under hard braking, as we have with other sports sedans, including the bmw 330i. the steering is slightly heavier in the s60 awd, because of the weight of the all-wheel-drive system. (volvo prefers to say it has a more 'on-center feel,' which is fair enough.) the ride also is firmer on the all-wheel-drive version, using stiffer shocks to handle the weight. We think it's a worthwhile tradeoff to get the awd's improved traction and handling in the rain and snow. we drove over gravel roads in the s60 awd, and the directional stability on this loose surface was excellent. Power in the s60 awd is distributed between the front and rear wheels using a wet multi-plate clutch controlled by electronics, and the distribution varies according to conditions. With a steady throttle on dry pavement, about 95 percent of the drive is transmitted to the front wheels; but up to 70 percent can go to the rear wheels when required. The balance changes instantaneously. When one wheel slips 15 degrees, far less than any human can detect, the balance of power shifts away from that wheel, thus replacing the slip with grip. In other words, it's just more secure and better stuck to the road when the weather gets nasty. the s60r is another.
