2009 jeep liberty review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Class-leading off-road capability. introductionthe jeep liberty is quite capable off road, one of the best in its class. Compared to the jeep patriot and compass, the liberty is more of a true jeep, with off-road prowess and bold, upright styling. the jeep liberty was all-new for 2008, and is further improved for 2009, with refinements to its suspension, steering, and brakes. the 2008-2009 liberty is taller and more angular than the 2002-2007 models, reminiscent of the much-loved, rugged but crude 1990s jeep cherokee. The current model is bigger than the previous generation: 2. 5 inches longer overall, and 2. 0 inches longer in wheelbase. It rides smoother, too; but it maintains the ruggedness of the previous version. all liberty models come with a 3. 7-liter v6 that makes 210 horsepower. When it comes to fuel economy, the liberty's weight and powertrain provide numbers that are on the lower end of the class. jeep has made an effort to refine the liberty and add premium options. Snow belt drivers will appreciate the full-time all-wheel drive system available in addition to the part-time system. Within its class, only the nissan xterra can claim as much off-road capability. when they redesigned it for 2008, jeep engineers set out to give the liberty pleasant road manners and, when it comes to ride quality, they succeeded. The liberty rides firmly, but irons out most bumps quite well and is stable on the highway. The liberty sacrifices handling for off-road prowess, however. The liberty leans in turns and has a floppy feeling in quick changes of direction. It's this aspect that makes the liberty most comparable to the nissan xterra and ford escape. These three are more rugged, more capable off road than the honda cr-v, toyota rav4, and nissan rogue, which are lighter, more agile, and more car-like. If we were heading up a rough logging road, we'd be pleased to be in a liberty. inside, the liberty has plenty of room for five. We view it as a step back in terms of materials quality and fit and finish, however. The previous liberty had more soft touch surfaces and closer panel gaps, while the current model has more hard-plastic surfaces. Still, it's not an unpleasant cockpit. cargo room is a plus. The liberty's second row seats fold flat, as does the front passenger seat, to provide plenty of room for hauling boxes, bikes and life's other accessories. with a maximum towing capacity of 5,000 pounds, rugged off-road capability and plenty of cargo space, the jeep liberty is a good choice for small families or couples that tow boats or go camping. The models are sport 22,715), sport 4wd 24,325), limited 25,820), and limited 4wd 27,430). Both systems have low-range gearing. Sport features include cloth upholstery, air conditioning, tilt steering wheel, 65/35 split folding rear seats, power mirrors, power locks, power windows, remote keyless entry, am/fm/cd/mp3 stereo and auxiliary input jack, vehicle information center, and p225/75r16 all-season tires on aluminum wheels. Floor mats come standard. Limited include the premium group 995) with heated front seats, leather upholstery, six-way power driver's seat with memory, and remote starting; the premium group 2 2,295) which adds automatic climate control, power passenger seat, interior air filter, rainsense automatic wipers, rear obstacle detection and p235/60r18 all-season tires on chromed aluminum wheels to the premium group; and mygig multimedia infotainment system 1,550) with a 20-gigabyte hard drive, integrated am/fm receiver with cd/dvd player, gps navigation with voice recognition and memo function, jeep's uconnect wireless phone link, usb port and touch-screen display. The limited's premium sound group 395) adds uconnect and a 6-cd/dvd changer. Since a full-size spare is already standard on limited, the trailer package costs less 395). safety features include the mandated dual front airbags, plus head-protecting side-curtain airbags with rollover sensors and front side airbags for torso protection. Active safety features include anti-lock brakes with brake assist, hill start assist, traction control, and electronic stability control with rollover mitigation. The antilock brakes have rough road detection; when rough conditions are detected, the system holds the brake pulses longer to better slow the vehicle. Hill descent control is standard on 4x4 models. Optional safety features include trailer sway control and rear obstacle detection. walkaroundwhen jeep introduced the liberty in mid-2001 as a 2002 model, it was the middle of a three vehicle lineup. Now the second-generation liberty is one of a six-vehicle family. Compared to the patriot and compass, it is more of a true jeep, with off-road prowess and bold, upright styling. the liberty is unmistakable as a jeep. The current model is 2. 5 inches longer and 0. 8 inch wider than the previous generation (2002-07), with a wheelbase that grows by 1. 8 inches. Its tall, upright, angular styling fits with the current jeep design idiom while also recalling the 1990s cherokee. It is the same platform used for the last model and it is shared with the dodge nitro. The big news here is the new rear suspension. It's an independent five-link unit that allows for greater interior room and better ride characteristics. the most noticeable aspect of the front end is jeep's characteristic seven-slot grille, which is taller on this model. The grille is body color on sport, chrome on limited. The front fascia is body color on all, and the front air dam is removable to provide more ground clearance for off-roading. from the side, the liberty looks like a junior commander, with tall windows in a squared off greenhouse. The limited's chrome theme extends to the side with chrome side trim and roof rails. These components are black on sport, and the roof rails are optional. Jeep has moved it under the floor. The tailgate also changes from the swing gate used in 2002-07 to a liftgate design, and separate opening rear glass is standard. jeep says its competition is the honda crv, ford escape, toyota rav4 and nissan xterra. The liberty is approximately the same size as these vehicles, but is considerably heavier than all but the xterra. It is also more capable off-road than all but the xterra. interiorthough not luxurious, the interior of the jeep liberty is functional. Most drivers will like the high seating position. Head room in the front seat is plentiful, but the tallest drivers will want more available front leg room. The side mirrors are large and the cabin has a lot of glass, making for fine rear visibility. the gauges are easy to spot and the controls are simple to use. The climate functions are controlled by three simple knobs and the radio and other vehicle controls are straightforward. There is a useful cubby on the center of the dash top, and sizable grab handle is located just above the smallish glove box. The center console is deep and has a removable tray on top. There is also a small tray next to the shift handle. In 4wd models, a small electronic switch replaces the previous generation's transfer case lever. we don't think the interior feels like an upgrade from the previous generation, however. 2009 chrysler town & country review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. America's family friendly minivan. introductionchrysler redesigned the town & country minivan for 2008 and adds new safety technologies for 2009. With these seating arrangements, chrysler bills the town & country as the ultimate family friendly vehicle, and we agree. the 2009 chrysler town & country is offered with three v6 engines. The base engine, a 3. 3-liter v6, lacks power and isn't very fuel efficient. The 3. 8-liter v6 is adequate for around-town duty, but the best choice is the available 4. 0-liter v6. The town & country is a big vehicle, however, and it is not nimble. It is prone to body lean in turns and the ride can feel floaty at highway speeds. The honda odyssey and nissan quest are more car-like and sportier. on the other hand, the town & country's entertainment and seating options are the best in the class, matched only by the dodge grand caravan. The standard stow 'n go seating tucks the second-row seats nicely into the floor, and when those seats are up, the floor bins offer storage space. The second row turns to face the third row with a table in between. It helps keep the kids entertained with games of checkers, a place to draw, or any number of other possibilities. The dual screens allow different viewing options for kids that can't agree on what to watch. And for the adults up front, chrysler's uconnect hard-drive radio stores hundreds of songs. in addition to the new safety options, chrysler has updated the brake system for 2009 to reduce noise, vibration and harshness. New smartbeam headlights that dim automatically are available, and chrysler has added more equipment to the base model. The equipment shuffling has increased the base price considerably (almost $4000), so the town & country is no longer an inexpensive choice. overall, however, the 2009 town & country does what a minivan should. It is a great vehicle for families that need to haul kids and cargo on a regular basis. And the seating and entertainment options will prevent a lot of the fights that inevitably accompany road trips. The limited upgrades to a 251-hp 4. 0-liter v6 with the six-speed automatic. Also offered are chrysler's uconnect multimedia suite 1,300) with a rearview camera, chrysler's uconnect phone hands-free cell phone link and chysler's uconnect gps, which adds a navigation system with real-time traffic and voice activation to the uconnect tunes 30-gigabyte hard-drive radio. Three rear dvd entertainment systems are offered. The lx model is available with entertainment group 1 2,120), which has a single rear dvd screen, and also comes with sirius satellite radio, a rearview camera, and a 115-volt power outlet. Entertainment group 3 2,020) for the limited model has two rear video screens with two dvd players, plus sirius backseat tv. A trailer tow group 600) includes heavy-duty engine cooling, trailer wiring harness, and load-leveling rear air suspension. Stand-alone options include two integrated child seats 225) for the second row, a sunroof 895), a power-folding third-row seat 595), and sirius backseat tv 495). Several of the higher line standard features are also available for the lower line models. new for 2009 are chrysler's rear cross path and blind spot alert systems. Both are offered, along with uconnect phone, in a safety group for the limited 825). The short wheelbase body style was dropped with the 2008 redesign. Sizewise, the town & country's size is comparable to several competitors. The nissan quest, kia sedona, honda odyssey, and toyota sienna are all within two inches, plus or minus, in overall length. The roof is wide at the top, also contributing to the boxy look. the snout features a large grille heavily influenced by that of the chrysler sebring and pacifica. The body sides have a clean, simple design, as the last model's side strakes have been eliminated. The rear liftgate is available with power operation, which is handy, but the rear glass doesn't open separately, which isn't. Chrome accents on the front and rear fascias, door handles, belt molding, and mirrors lend an upscale appearance. interiorthe town & country's competitive advantage can be found on the inside. While ambiance and materials quality are not tops in the class, thoughtful features are. The chrysler town & country is brimming with them. first the mundane. Hard plastic dominates the dash and doors. The only padded surfaces are found on the captain's chairs' fold-down armrests, and they are an unimpressive looking rubberized material. The gauges are easy to spot and the various controls are clearly marked. the radio and/or uconnect tunes/gps system is set high on the center of the dash for easy access. With either system, the controls are easy to use, but those on the right side are a bit of a reach for the driver. The cd/dvd changer is also set low, making it a possible distraction to use while driving. The gearshift is mounted between the radio and the instrument panel. Both systems have a 30-gigabyte (up from 20 gigs last year) hard drive to hold music, pictures, and, with the navigation system, navigation map information. Both systems are capable of holding hundreds, and even thousands of songs. front-seat room and comfort are typical for a minivan. The front captain's chairs afford an upright driving position with an suv-like view of the road. There is plenty of head room, and leg room will only be lacking for the tallest drivers.
